Hairline cracks in the top layer

Reserve budget for future sports floor repair

Hairline cracks due to use and aging

Over time, the elasticity of the pu sports floor decreases. Due to the many movements during sports, hairline cracks eventually appear in the top layer. They look like small dark scratches, are superficial and may be through the top layer. If this is not the case, they can change quickly.

Risks when damaged

Hard blows from a field hockey stick or sports equipment falling on the floor can also leave cracks. Eventually, dirt and water are likely to penetrate and affect the shock-absorbing layer. There is a good chance that within a few years the sports floor will become detached from the subfloor. This means major damage, an unsafe floor and a high cost to fix the problem.

Topcoat renovation prevents worse

Does the sports floor still have good athletic properties, but there are many hairline cracks in the PU floor? Then reserve budget in advance for renovating the top layer. A top layer renovation prevents major problems and high costs and ensures a safe and well-functioning sports floor.

A worn, poorly sealed or uneven floor facility poses a hazard to users.

Worn, poorly sealed or uneven floor provisions

Floor pots, ground bushes and floor anchors are important floor provisions of a sports floor. They serve to firmly fix floor posts or sports equipment to the ground. The construction and design of a floor provision is different and depends on its function. For example, we know ground bushings with or without wire provision, quick-release devices, ground bushings with metal eye and special floor dispensers.

Danger to athletes

Floor fixtures that are not at the proper height pose an immediate risk. A floor pot that is too high or too low can lead to trips and injuries. This is not only dangerous for athletes, but can have legal consequences if injuries occur.

Much damage to floor poles occurs due to improper use. Ensure that poles and other sports equipment are properly placed and removed. Avoid excessive loads and always use proper protective materials.

If the seal around the floor pots is not good, water from the scrubber can soak into the shock absorbing layer of the sports floor. This swells and the floor can come loose. Bumps in the PU sports floor increase the risk of tripping and falling.

Tips to prevent sports floor damage

Don’t miss these tips to prevent unintended damage to the sports floor during events in the sports hall or gymnasium.

Start with proper protection beforehand

  • Take preventive measures and invest in sports floor protection such as using protective flooring against dirt and damage.
  • Place felts or caps under table legs and chair legs to prevent direct contact between the furniture and the floor. This minimizes friction and reduces the risk of scratches and streaks.

Clean the sports floor before, during and after each event

  • Provide cleaning during and after the event and establish a schedule to clean the sports floor daily. When doing so, remove sand, dirt and any spills to prevent them from penetrating the floor.
  • Wet confetti can cause unsightly stains that penetrate deep into the PU floor. We recommend removing confetti quickly and carefully with a vacuum cleaner or dry floor wiper. Only then clean the floor with water and a neutral detergent.

With the above measures, you protect the sports floor, reduce the risk of sports floor damage and contribute to a longer lifespan.

Always consider whether alternative venues or other spaces are available without sports floors when hosting an event or non-sports related activities.
