Safety with a smoke screen

Can we get back to the core of judging for a moment? At safesportsfloor.com, everything is about safety. That makes sense, because the name says it all. In the Netherlands, much is regulated around the issue of safety. Just look at all the laws and regulations on safe working, safe sports, safe living, and so on. Perhaps we are a bit overorganized with all the rules and obligations, labels and controls. But what if this security legislation is going to cost us money? For example, setting up a quality assurance system is quite an investment, and so is running a seal of approval.

And yet we all understand the importance of periodic inspection, hallmarking and managing safety regulations. Read: fire extinguishers, AVG, playground equipment… The idea is, in fact, that thanks to those paid, periodic inspections, we will reduce, and hopefully prevent, the likelihood of even greater expenses. Comparison to current events: we are going to lower the chances of corona infections by testing, testing, testing. Everyone is cooperating with it en masse. Gladly even, because we want to go to a concert, a festival or just play sports indoors again.

So where does this huge smokescreen suddenly come from when it comes to periodic sports floor safety inspections? ‘After all, the sports floor hasn’t been used for a year, it’s safe.’ Is there a fallacy here? We can’t get our finger on it. Measurement is and remains, in our opinion, knowing, even at the time of corona and a lockdown on indoor sports. That is precisely the whole idea of testing, testing, labels and certifications. So ask yourself this question: as an indoor athlete, do you want to avoid corona contamination but still suffer an injury?
