Renovation of the removable game floor at the Donar basketball club

The combination of a top-level basketball court in a multifunctional event hall places high demands on both the floor and its maintenance. MartiniPlaza, Donar’s home arena, is used not only for concerts, trade shows, and conferences but also for home games. The standard concrete floor is not suitable for elite-level competitions. That is why a portable floor from Connor Sports was chosen.

This modular sports floor is installed and removed about fifty times a year. After nine years of intensive use, the floor was showing signs of wear and tear. The finish was worn, splinters had appeared, and stickers gave the floor a neglected appearance.

As a result, the floor no longer met the desired safety and aesthetic standards. The challenge was to completely renovate the competition floor before the start of the new season.

A renovation with a fresh new look

In addition to restoring its athletic performance characteristics, the floor was also given a new look. To mark Donar’s 75th anniversary, the club chose a design that references the club colors from the early 1970s: red, white, and green.

The old blue floor was replaced with a new green design that reflects the club’s history.

A new look, the same familiar foundation

To restore the floor to a condition suitable for heavy use, we carried out a complete renovation.

The competition floor consists of individual, numbered panels that can be easily assembled and disassembled. Together with MartiniPlaza, we assembled the floor and then sanded it down completely. The old coating, line markings, and logo were removed, revealing the natural wood.

After that, each floorboard was coated, one by one, with a new primer (adhesive layer) and a first coat of clear sports varnish that meets the requirements of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

After rebuilding the floor, we applied the green coating, new line markings, and the Donar club logo. Because the coating extended over the seams, we carefully re-cut all the joints. This made it easy to dismantle the floor again.

After taking the floor apart again, we painted the 3-meter circle. We used a special whitewash coating for this. Afterward, we applied the final layer of sports-grade varnish to the entire floor. (FIBA-certified)

Thanks to the efforts of our sports flooring specialists and a group of dedicated MartiniPlaza employees, we completed the renovation within 3.5 weeks. We also worked intensively on the weekends to stay on schedule.

From the request for a quote to completion, we finished the entire project within two months.

The court is once again ready for many seasons of top-level competition. Donar once again has a safe, durable, and presentable court that can be easily set up for every home game.
